2008 South African HORRORFEST
WRAP-UP & SHORT FILM WINNERS

The 2008 South African HORRORFEST closed with a bang to a packed theatre for the third part of the SHADOW REALM Short Film Collection. It was followed by the short film awards ceremony.

We’re overjoyed that each year we get more entries from all over the world and that the standard keeps getting better (making it that much more difficult for us to decide on winners!) – but, as cliché as it may seem, we see everyone as winners, not just by having their movies included in the line-up for the audience to enjoy (or get creeped-out by!), but that you actually got up and went through the arduous and often strenuous task of making them.

And those who did not get selected, many factors had to be taken into account, and it doesn’t mean your movie is not worthy or that you should not continue to submit them to the S.A. HORRORFEST. Where possible, we will include them in other cinematic ventures like our X Fest Film Festival.

A big thank you to all the movie-makers, media, Visual Impact, HD Hub, The Labia Theatre, Something Wicked Magazine, Ster Kinekor, Nu Metro, Masque Make-Up & FX Warehouse, WildFire Tattoos, Path Of Sin, City Varsity, AFDA, EMI, Bothner Music, Sound & Motion Studios, and of course all the HORRORFEST supporters and loyal regulars.

Below you’ll find the list of short film winners (the top South African short walking off with the R20 000 production prize from Visual Impact / Magus / HD Hub – www.visuals.tv / www.hdhub.co.za).

Feature film category mentions will be made public next week.

Our first ever guest appearance by special make-up FX artist Clinton Smith chatting about his work on the LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT remake (after the screening of the original) was amazing.

The move to have two live soundtrack performances for HÄXAN ended up being a good one, as both performances were packed. It went down a storm.

The NOSFERATU original live soundtrack performance from the 2006 HORRORFEST is now available on DVD!
The full movie appears on the TERMINATRYX/NOSFERATU DVD with the new soundtrack recorded live, as performed by TERMINATRYX, Simon & Sean (from LARK), Francois (from K.O.B.U.S. & V.O.D), and Matthijs (DAWNTREADER). The DVD also includes additional TERMINATRYX and HORRORFEST material, music videos and a short film.
ORDER HERE!

We will definitely be releasing a series of SHADOW REALM DVDs down the line, featuring selections of the best short films (local & international) screened across the years at the S.A. HORRORFEST.

Thanks again from Flamedrop Productions & Shadow Realm, inc. - see you next year!

• SCAR - 3D
SPECIAL SNEAK PREVIEW
Wednesday 29 October, 8pm - Cape Town, Pretoria, Johannesburg

As a pre-Fest treat, a limited number of HorrorFest supporters quick on the draw will get to attend a sneak preview of this 3D chiller (on Wednesday 29 October, 8pm) before its national big screen release. SCAR is the first horror film you'll get to experience in the new eye-popping 3D technology.

We know how the rest of South Africa is screaming for the HORRORFEST to hit their region, and each year we seriously look at the possibilities - logistics, budget and cinema locations are a big issue, but we're aiming at expanding the festival beyond Cape Town in 2009.

Meanwhile this special sneak preview will allow the 4th annual S.A. HORRORFEST to reach the rest of the country and go down in three major cities at Ster Kinekor locations equipped with this brilliant new 3D technology:
Cavendish Mall (Cape Town)
Brooklyn Mall (Pretoria)
The Zone @ Rosebank (Johannesburg)

The tickets are limited to 10 HorrorFesters (plus a guest) at each of the above locations (60 tickets in total).

This 3D system is awesome, surpassing all versions before, and will blow you away if you haven’t experienced it yet.

To be one of the lucky ones to attend this exclusive 3D horror preview screening (together with a friend), answer the question below and e-mail it together with your full name, address & phone number (and the location where you'd like to see Scar 3D) to: info@flamedrop.com
> e-mail message subject: SCAR 3D

Question:
When was the South African HORRORFEST created?

Please ensure that you and your partner will be able to attend the screening, and remember to add which of the three preview theatres are closest to you. Popcorn and drinks will be supplied and there will also be some Scar 3D T-shirts up for grabs at the screening.
Winners will be notified via e-mail.
Your name will be on a list at the specified theatre venue.

• HÄXAN (The Witch) - Live Soundtrack Performance
Friday 31 October (Halloween Night)
Two shows only - 7:15pm & 9:15pm (R40)

This superb 1922 silent classic directed by Benjamin Christensen was chosen for the customary HORRORFEST live soundtrack performance.

With the popularity of these performances outgrowing the size of the theatre, this year will see 2 shows for Häxan on Halloween night (as too many disappointed viewers had to be turned away last year when it sold out).

Häxan was decades ahead of its time, and so amazingly executed, from the cinematography, to the special effects. With a blend of dramatization, historic artwork and documentary-style depiction, Christensen delved into the phenomenon of witchcraft with the bold depiction of rituals, the satanic Sabbat, inquisition & torture, possessed nuns, and the general misconceptions that led to the murder of millions of innocent people falsely accused of practicing witchcraft. This movie pretty much ruined Christensen’s career as the world wasn’t ready for such daring filmmaking.

Paul & Sonja from TERMINATRYX will be joined by recurring collaborators Simon & Sean (ex-LARK) and violin maestro Matthijs Van Dijk, performing the new, eclectic soundtrack live to the screen. On this Halloween night (31 October) the audience is also encouraged to arrive dressed for the occasion – with prizes for those making the most effort.

Halloween at the HORRORFEST will also see the launch of the new TERMINATRYX DVD which includes the legendary silent vampire movie NOSFERATU (with its new musical soundtrack as performed by Terminatryx and guests at the 2006 HORRORFEST).

• DEAD NOON
Saturday 1 November – 12pm (R25)

We Thought The West Was Won

With the powers of hell at his disposal, Frank, a blood-thirsty outlaw from the old west, is resurrected to seek revenge on the present day town of Weston.

Dead Noon was picked up by Lion’s Gate and they added some additional scenes with Kane Hodder (Jason Voorhees from Friday The 13th) – but here you’ll get to see the original directors’ cut.

Directed by Andrew Wiest

• BUMBA ATOMIKA
Saturday 1 November – 2pm (R25)

Sliding along the lines of Natural Born Killers, this thrilling, visually stylish, high-energy, black-humoured Italian movie has competing serial killers rampaging through an idyllic wine district.

(Italian with English subtitles).

Written & Directed by Senesi Michele Man Chi:

• THINGS
Saturday 1 November – 4pm
(R25)

"So bad, so unfathomably, so unwatchingly terrible, one finds oneself going back to the film again and again... So despicable, one feels the need to share it with others..."
- Nick Sheehan (Cinema Sewer)

This Canadian B-movie celebrates its 19 ½ Year Anniversary and is a hilariously tacky cult favourite which has hardly seen light of day (or dark of night) in South Africa. Features porn star Amber Lynn in her first mainstream role.

We’ve decided to pose the audience with a challenge – if they can sit through the entire movie, all the way ‘till the house lights come up, we’ll award their courage with a free ticket to another movie screening at the 2008 S.A. HORRORFEST!

Co-written & Directed by Andrew Jordan

• LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT
Saturday 1 November – 8pm (R25)

Can a movie go too far?

To Avoid Fainting, Keep Repeating,
“It’s Only A Movie… Only A Movie…. Only A Movie…"

We’re sure most of you have heard this classic tag-line. Now you’ll get to see this visceral 1972 offering from Wes Craven (Nightmare On Elm Street & Scream series) on the big screen. It was recently re-made and shot here in Cape Town, South Africa. Producer Sean S. Cunningham (Friday The 13th) granted us permission to screen this intense trip into brutality and vengeance.

This year we present a very special guest!
After the Last House On The Left screening, special make-up FX artist Clinton Smith will talk about his bloody work on the re-make.
Masque.co.za

• DARK REEL
Sunday 2 November – 2pm (R25)

It's going to be a killer shoot

Starring Lance Henriksen (Aliens), Edward Furlong (Terminator 2), Tony Todd (Candyman), Tiffany Shepis (Nightmare Man), Mercedes McNab (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Rena Riffel (Mulholland Drive), Tracy Walter (The Silence Of The Lambs) and a camoe by Rick Baker (award winning special make-up FX artist).

A film shoot (which incorporates a fan who won a walk-on role) turns nasty when actors are viciously murdered. Dark secrets from the past start reaching into the present.

Directed by Josh Eisenstadt

• ZOMBIE HONEYMOON
Sunday 2 November – 4pm (R25)

In Sickness And In Health

"Zombie Honeymoon will move your heart - then rip it out!"
- Fangoria Magazine

A newly married couple’s happiness takes a turn for the worst when the husband becomes a zombie on their honeymoon! Will she take “’till death do us part” literally? A romantic comedy of the gory kind. There will be autographed copies of the movie and photographs by lead star Tracy Coogan up for grabs.

Info on Tracy's new movie Dark Woods and other updates can be found at: www.tracycoogan.com

Written & Directed by Dave Gebroe

• MALDITO BASTARDO! (Damn Bastard!)
Sunday 2 November – 6pm (R25)

A crazy, innovative and rather blackly humorous Spanish gem about a mad scientist and his fervent quest for an antidote to stop the infection he accidentally contracts.

(Spanish with English subtitles).

Directed by Javi Camino

• VAMPIRA The Movie
Sunday 2 November – 8:30pm (R25)

In this long overdue documentary, the moviemakers focus on the highly interesting life of the first ever Horror TV Hostess, Vampira (aka Maila Nurmi). It chronicles her life, career, friends (who included James Dean & Marlon Brando), her cult status and more. While very reclusive, the moviemakers managed to get some extensive interviews with her. Sadly this timeless icon passed away shortly after the movie was completed.

Also features Sid Haig, Bill Moseley, Forrest J. Ackerman, Jerry Only (Misfits), Lloyd Kaufman, Cassandra Peterson (Elvira). Music by Ari Lehman (the original Jason in the first Friday The 13th).

Includes DVD give-aways of the movie.

Directed by Kevin Sean Michael

• THE WEREWOLF vs. VAMPIRE WOMAN
Monday 3 November – 6:15pm (R25)

The bood flows like vintage wine!
See It With Someone You Hate!

When paths of bloodthirsty resurrected werewolf, and a vampire queen risen from the tomb cross - all hell breaks loose.

Directed by Leon Klim

• SHIVERS (aka It Came From Within)
Monday 3 November – 8:30pm (R25)

Terror Beyond The Power Of Priest Or Science To Exorcise.

David Cronenberg’s fantastic debut feature has biologically bred parasites loose in an isolated, exclusive high rise apartment, infiltrating its hosts and turning them into sex crazed zombies!

Still an absolute thrill with some great special FX.

• CREEPERS (aka Phenomena)
Tuesday 4 November – 6:15pm (R25)

It will make your skin crawl...

Jennifer has a few million friends - she's going to need them ALL.

Italian chill-meister Dario Argento’s very original tale stars a young Jennifer Connolly as an American student in Switzerland who has a unique telekinetic connection with insects – which leads to assisting her in solving the identity of a brutal killer. Also stars Donald Peasance (Halloween) and Argento regular Daria Nicolodi.

Featuring music by Iron Maiden, Motörhead and Argento’s favourite soundtrack creators, Goblin.

• GIMME SKELTER
Tuesday 4 November – 8:30pm (R25)

"A fine example of how imaginative a genre film can be - Gimme Skelter has thrills, chills, and slaughterhouse kills."
- Axel Howerton (EyeCraveDVD)

What would happen if the illegitimate son of Charles Manson starts his own “family” and try to outdo his old man by eliminating an entire small town? The title is a culmination of The Beatles’ “Helter Skelter” and the Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter”, the former a song Charles Manson obsessed over and the latter also marking a dramatic murder incident which changed our times forever.

Starring Gunnar Hanson (Leatherface in the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre). Music by Spindrift, Zombina & The Skeletons, Angry Johnny & The Killbillies.

Written & Directed by Scott Phillips

Directed by Joseph Green
