If you can get past the point of believing Charlie in the role of an astronomer, then you're well on your way. This was in fact made about a year before Contact, and sees Sheen listening to the heavens. On intercepting a signal that may be alien, he gets fired but investigates solo, uncovering a nasty conspiracy including global warming and alien colonization.
