DOOMSDAY

With Rhona Mitra, Bob Hoskins, Malcolm McDowell, Craig Conway, MyAnna Buring, Adrian Lester, Nora-Jane Noone, Sean Pertwee, Darren Morfitt

Written & Directed by Neil Marshall

Shot in Cape Town, South Africa, I covered this big budget violent action flick for Fangoria Magazine (incl. the cover issue in #271 as well as a piece on special make-up FX artist Paul Hyett in issue #272, as well as on-line Fango articles). It took a while for the final product to get back here.
The story unfolds after a deadly virus was contained by cutting England off from Scotland. The Reaper Virus has reared its ugly head decades later though, and a cure has to be found. Life has been detected in Scotland and a crack team of experts led by Eden Sinclair is sent in to find the cure.
With a vast palette ranging from futuristic and post apocalyptic to medieval, the team is confronted with a vast gang of marauders with more than just a taste for violence. Director Neil Marshall has admit to Doomsday being a homage to movies like Mad Max:The Road Warrior, Escape From New York and The Warriors.
I was expecting the gore factor to be a bit higher, and I’m wondering if it was toned down to ensure better box office? Mitra looks good and handles herself well, with a load of Marshall regulars filling out the cast.
Being a native Capetonian and visiting three of the sets during shooting, I think some of the fantasy had been corrupted to truly get captivated by this world, as I could not help but recognize familiar locations and local extras!
A great fun ride loaded with thrills and spills.
