Last Days On Mars

LAST DAYS ON MARS

With Liev Schreiber, Elias Koteas, Romola Garai, Goran Kostić, Johnny Harris, Tom Cullen, Yusra Warsama, Olivia Williams

Written by Clive Dawson, (based on the short story "The Animators" by Sydney J. Bounds)
Directed by Ruairí Robinson

What starts out as a very interesting and visually captivating Mars exploration chiller sadly declines into opting for a basic zombie-flavoured infection-flick storyline.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of tacky horror (with some prerequisites and definite exceptions), but while watching this, I wanted more than this premise of a crew finding a micro-organism on Mars which, when exposed to it, turns humans into dehydrated creeps than want to tear others to bits.
It feels as though the possibilities were far greater than that, and that they may have expanded it more from the short story on which it is based.

Regardless, it is by no means unwatchable, just regurgitating a well-worn theme of survivors running to escape these bloodthirsty fiends (with the added hazard of being stuck on an inhospitable planet and hostile environment with oxygen running out).
