MIMIC 2

With Alix Koromzay, Bruno Campos, Jon Polito
Directed by Jean De Segonzac

After Guillermo del Toro's inspired Mexican vampire take
Cronos, we saw his admirable break into the US mainstream with his grisly and original urban horror project Mimic. Judas bugs were developed to infiltrate a cockroach plague by imitating their prey - but when they evolved with humans becoming their target, the city was in deep shit! The underground subway tunnels, creepy giant bugs and dark mood was great and the conclusion final enough. Then imagine the surprise when years later they pull this stinker out of the can - it seemed so long ago, in fact, that most of the sequel's video box synopsis contains the first film's rundown! It seems as though Hollywood is really low on ideas, even at the Weinsteins' Miramax empire. Here a bug obsessed biology teacher coincidentally gets embroiled in a resurgence of the Judas bugs, their victims becoming clues to suspecting her as a killer. Throw in a kid, a wise-ass cop and some totally lame scares - this one can stay on the shelf. A highly unnecessary exercise. The crappy role as the school principle by Jon Polito (of the Coen Brothers fame) proves that some actors have to take roles to pay the bills.
