With Casper Van Dien, Dina Myers, Michael Ironside, Jake Busey, Denise Richards, Neil Patrick Harris, Clancy Brown Directed by Paul Verhoeven Verhoeven's over the top energy, and lack of both scruples and political correctness is perfectly suited for this wild futuristic ride. An alien insect spawn attacks earth and young fighters sign up for the greater good. Even the girls are macho in this exciting sci-fi action pic. With the advent of CGI and RoboCop behind him, this must've been no problem for Verhoeven. The spectacular FX and violent action is its strongest point, the cheap romantic and gung-ho tough guy bits a mere side-plate, but acceptable for its comic book cheesiness. If you have a bug phobia, this might creep you out big-time, or, on the other hand, their splattered annihilation might give you thrills of satisfaction!
