UNDERWORLD - BLOOD WARS
With Kate Beckinsale, Theo James, Charles Dance, Tobias Menzies, Lara Pulver, James Faulkner, Clementine Nicholson
Written by Corey Goodman & Kyle Ward
Directed by Anna Foerster
The Underworld franchise has been at it since 2003, with the war between vampires and lycans (werewolves) taking many turns (and some would feel perhaps hitting a dead end?). But here it's resurrected, with Beckinsale returning as (outcast) deathdealer Selene (who still makes tight leather / PVC catsuits look like the most delicious liqourice you've ever seen!).
With Selene's hybrid daughter the target of the lycans who believe she's the key to defeat the vampires, on top of this she is betrayed by a power hungry faction within the vampire council.
The last hope is the Nordic snowbound coven who lives isolated and not part of any war. But they get pulled in to fight with the righteous against the destructive vampire- and lycan forces.
All the action and intrigue is supplemented with power struggles and the protection and upliftment of a true heir born to lead.
Where Len Wiseman directed the original films and make-up and FX designer Patrick Tatopolous doing the Rise Of The Lycans origin chapter, here the producers opted to inject a female director's touch with Anna Foerster (whose work has mainly been as TV director with shows like Outlander, but has been director of photography on many big action-adventure pictures like that of Roland Emmerich).
Extras: a glimpse at returning- and new characters, and the Evolution of Evil.
