A small Aussie town is overrun by the undead when a meteorite strikes. A group of survivors have to fight for their lives as hope starts to fade.

UNDEAD is one of the most enjoyable and innovative independent horror films to come from Australia in recent years. Michael and Peter Spierig turned their modestly budgeted movie into something extraordinary which looks as though it cost 50 times the amount.
With a lot of dedication, determination and cinematic ingenuity, they crafted one hell of movie, visually accomplished and laced with humour and ample gore.

An UNDEAD movie poster signed especially for the HORRORFEST by directors Michael and Peter Spierig will be up for grabs at the screening!

HORROR BUSINESS
SATURDAY 27 OCTOBER - 8:30pm (R20)

HORROR BUSINESS
is an outrageously entertaining documentary about guerrilla horror filmmakers and the bizarre culture that drives them to pursue their dreams. In 2003, filmmaker Christopher P. Garetano began what would become a two year journey to discover what possesses people to become horror filmmakers... Armed with nothing but a camera and a microphone, Chris traveled all over the United States to visit independent filmmakers on and off their sets. In Horror Business you will witness that two year journey unfold and meet some truly independent filmmakers including Mark Borchardt (American Movie) and Dave Gebroe (Zombie Honeymoon) along with monster movie personalities like Herschell Gordon Lewis (Blood Feast), Joe Bob Briggs (cult film critic & author), and Sid Haig (Spider Baby, The Devils Rejects). Horror Business is a timeless essay of popcorn generation nostalgia and behind-the-scenes moments that just may prove... movie making really is no way to spend a life...

" Horror Business is a terrific flick. Christopher Garetano has completely succeeded in describing the passions, the adventures- and the misadventures- of crazy people like me who, somewhere along the way, decided they... needed to make movies. Anyone who wants to write or direct should see this film. Those who have never dreamed of being filmmakers should see it for its humor and its pure entertainment value. Two thumbs up- both of them mine because, like the others Garetano has portraited, I basically work alone. "
- George A. Romero (Night Of The Living Dead)

ZIBAHKHANA (Hell's Ground)
SATURDAY 27 OCTOBER - 10:30pm (R20)

ZIBAHKHANA
(HELL'S GROUND) is the first modern horror film to be shot in Pakistan. It breaks all of the rules of local productions and was made entirely independently with no film industry or government assistance.

In the spirit of the old EC comics, the film tells the story of five teens who get lost on their way to a rock concert, are menaced by flesh eating mutations and then fall into the clutches of a family of back woods killers. The film includes copious amounts of gore alongside a splattering of social commentary and several slices of dark humour. It's best seen as a tribute to the cinema of Lucio Fulci and George Romero, but viewed from a distinctly Pakistani perspective.

The film is directed and co-written by former film critic Omar Ali Khan. Its cast combines some of the country's most exciting new talent alongside Pakistani film veterans such as Rehan and Najma Malik. The gruesome make-up effects were done by Nawab Sagar, another industry veteran who has worked on numerous mainstream productions. The film was shot by London trained cinematographer Najaf Bilgrami and was edited by the UK's Andy Starke.

WHITE ZOMBIE
SUNDAY 28 OCTOBER - 4:00pm (R20)

WHITE ZOMBIE is an all time classic Bela Lugosi film, produced in 1932, a year after his landmark role as Dracula.

A young couple (Neil and Madeleine) gets married in Haiti at the behest of their new friend Monsieur Beaumont – but he in fact wants the girl. He approaches Legendre, a man whose zombie subjects submit to his mind control. When the spell is cast over Madeleine, Beaumont cannot undo his disastrous actions as Neil grieves, believing his new wife to be dead. But, Legendre has plans of his own.

Directed by Victor Halperin.
Starring with Lugosi are Madge Bellamy, Joseph Cawthorn, Robert Frazer.

Ridley Scott's ALIEN
plus H.R. GIGER'S SANCTUARY
SUNDAY 28 OCTOBER - 8:30pm (R20)

In 1979 Ridley Scott directed an historic Sci-Fi Horror classic in the shape of the legendary ALIEN. Written by Dan O’Bannon, scored by Jerry Goldsmith, and the unique Alien creature design created by H.R. Giger, this masterpiece is still hard to surpass. Having spawned many sequels (and countless imitations), the Alien phenomenon has become a culture unto itself.
So many people born after the original release of Alien (or too young to enter the cinema at the time) never had the opportunity to see this brilliant work of art on the big screen – well, here is your rare chance to do so, only at the South African HORRORFEST (courtesy of 20th Century Fox and Nu Metro).
This screening will be held in conjunction with the documentary short H.R. GIGER’S SANCTUARY, which takes an in depth look into the phenomenal art and mind of artist and Alien designer, H.R. Giger.
HorrorFest viewers will also be given some exclusive opportunities to see what the upcoming Alien vs Predator 2 (AVP2) has in store. AVP2 is set for release in South Africa on 4 January 2008.

H.R. GIGER'S SANCTUARY explores the treasures of the H.R. Giger Museum & Bar at the Chateau St. Germain in beautiful Gruyeres, Switzerland.

The documentary features an interview and a museum tour with the master of the airbrush, the inventor of "biomechanics", and the creator of the Academy Award winning "Alien".

The artist talks openly about his fascination with the morbid, his fame and cult following, his fears and nightmares, and about his visions of the future.

This documentary will be screened in conjunction with the original Sci-Fi Horror classic ALIEN, directed by Ridley Scott.

TALES FROM BEYOND
MONDAY 29 OCTOBER - 6:15pm (R20)

When a trendy young couple enter a quaint antiquarian bookstore seeking a present for their friend, they find more than they bargained for. Mysterious shopkeeper Jay (Adam West) takes the couple into the world of his books, leading them through four amazing stories: "Abernathy", "Nexs Diner", "Life Replay" and "Fighting Spirit."

In the tradition of classics from such legends as Serling, Roddenberry, and Hitchcock, TALES FROM BEYOND is a suspenseful anthology, filled with unique characters and haunting stories.

"Tales From Beyond" (directed by Josh Austin, Nate Barlow, Eric Manning and Russell Scott) won best picture awards at the 2004 ShockerFest and 2004 ShriekFest film festivals.

TENEBRAE
MONDAY 29 OCTOBER - 8:30pm (R20)

Italian master of horror Dario Argento’s TENEBRAE (aka Unsane) follows the story of an American writer in Rome. There is a demented killer out racking up the body count, using the man’s novels as inspiration for his gruesome murders.

In true Argento style, his visual impact cultivated with films like Suspiria and Deep Red is further expanded here, including point of view angles, broken glass, knives and lots of blood. Again features a great musical score by Goblin.

Fans of Italian Horror cinema and Giallo can catch the documentary HANGING SHADOWS on Thursday 1 November at 6:15pm

STUPID TEENAGERS MUST DIE!
TUESDAY 30 OCTOBER - 6:15pm (R20)

From Wiggy VonSchtick and Off Set Pictures comes a new entry into the slasher/zombie/exploitation genre that keeps its bloody tongue firmly in cheek.

It's the 1980’s and a group of teenagers are getting together to hold a seance in a haunted house. All the typical 80’s horror movie characters are there: the cool hero, the innocent girlfriend, the goth chick, the tough guy, the beautiful blonde girl, the shy guy in love with the beautiful blonde girl, a couple of lipstick lesbians and two big geeks.

In true low budget 80’s horror movie fashion, weird things start happening around the house. One dimensional characters are dying preposterously bloody deaths, girls are getting naked for no apparent reason and people walk into dangerous, pitch black rooms saying classic lines like, "Is someone in here?" As the poor, hapless kids are sliced and diced, it's up to our hero to lead the remaining survivors to safety before the house is filled with stupid dead teenagers.

Stupid Teenagers Must Die! is the directorial debut from Jeff C. Smith and features a talented cast of newcomers including Jovan Meredith (Overbrook Productions’ 125th And Nowhere), Ashley Schneider (Superbad), Devin Marble (Men's Room), Lindsay Gareth (The Comebacks) Renee Dorian (The Mangler Reborn) Cory Assink (C.S.I.), Jonathan Brett (Zoey 101), Will Deutsch (Strange Wilderness), Jamie Carson (Hunger Pains) and Christina DeRosa (Entourage).

SLIPKNOT – Voliminal: Inside The Nine
TUESDAY 30 OCTOBER - 8:30pm (R20)

No-one would have figured that the 9 masked metal monsters from Iowa would make such an impact on the music industry. With them it’s more than just getting into their masks and boiler suits, they live and breathe this demon called Slipknot.
Slipknot emerged from a saturated nu-metal market in the ‘90s (from the unlikely location of Iowa) with what seemed like a Kiss mask gimmick. But the nine-member strong band soon proved their critics wrong with their extreme laced, high caliber, original full metal jacket music, matched by some of the most intense live shows around.
This intense documentary takes a look inside this 18-legged beast across two years – taking you on the road, back stage, into the studio, festival footage, at music awards ceremonies and beyond. Some of your fears and suspicions will be confirmed while as many (if not more) will be proven wrong.
The band’s explosive presence permeates everything, and if you like your music light, sugar coated and unchallenging, this is knot the band for you!

At this screening there will be Slipknot CD give-aways!

THE CABINET OF DOCTOR CALIGARI
(Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari)

WEDNESDAY 31 OCTOBER - 8:30pm (R40)

As is customary, the S.A. HORRORFEST presents a silent classic with a live, original soundtrack performed to the screen.

On Halloween night, Robert Wiene’s legendary German film THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI (1919) will loom on the screen to a live soundtrack created by members of TERMINATRYX and LARK.
They will be joined by THE CRACKPOT REALIST and other guest artists.

The expressionistic film follows the tale of a magician at a fair who has a somnambulist (sleepwalker), who can predict the future. When a man asks when he’ll die, the prediction is, “by dawn” – and it happens! This leads to further mayhem and panic. With an incredibly effective and graphic angular expressionistic style in the set design, this piece of cinema history is still something to behold – and here further enhanced with the live soundtrack.

Live sound by Trilogy Music

While viewers are encouraged to dress up as their favourite monsters (or any ghoulish, freaky costumes & make-up) throughout the Festival, this Halloween night screening is where the best dressed winner will be selected - with cool Horror prizes including DVDs, CDs, PlayStation stuff, Halloween goodies (from Party Tricks) and Gothic gear (from Plastic Bat).
